Hi,

I have a bunch of very short .mpg movies that I'd like to string together into a single file. Is there any simple way to do that in an older version of OS X like 10.3.9?

I read in other posts that people recommend copying and pasting into iMovie. But the problem for me is that I can only play these files with VLC Player. Playing them with Quicktime gives me a white screen and it says I need some sort of decoding components even though I've installed Flip4Mac and Divx. Maybe the more up-to-day versions will do the trick? but I'm still on OS X 10.3.9 and I feel like this is a dead end for me.

So I tried the Terminal route with this command: CAT 1.mpg 2.mpg 3.mpg > joined.mpg. But the combined movie seems to show only the first movie content even though its size is the sum of all the seperate files. Is there something I did wrong here?

Those are the only two options that I know of. Please help me out here. Thanks a lot!

The concatenation method only works for MPEG Program Streams (PS), not MPEG Transport Streams (TS). Even if your sources are PS players may only display the duration of the first movie, but play past the end to include the other movies.

MPEG Streamclip (free) should work on 10.3 and do what you want.

Thanks for the tip. I just tried MPEG Streamclip but it looks like it doesn't support the files just like iMovie. Is there any components I'm missing? I've always had trouble playing these .mpg movies and VLC bailed me out everytime although it doesn't allow me to copy and paste.

Can you post the MediaInfo report on what's in them?

OK, I just found out about Mediainfo and it looks very handy. But again, I couldn't find any older versions that don't require OS X 10.4 or later. Do you happen to know any links?
