Who likes what & why?

I never looked at Q Essentials in much detail.

I was a longtime Quicken for Mac user. Then I got fed up with the lack of features and ability to customize reports. I switched to Q for Windows (running on Fusion), and I'm much happier.

Since then, Intuit has continued to REDUCE the functionality of Q for Mac. Q Essentials is really only a castrated version of the previous version, wrapped in a new GUI.

I don't need anything too complex. It's just for keeping track of three simple accounts, no investment portfolios, no fancy reports, no online banking.

I used iBank for a while, but could never get it to deal with transfers between accounts in a simple way, & the GUI annoyed me after a while.

Something simple, something clean.

Yeah, Q E might do what you need. Isn't there a free atrial version ?

Quicken Mac meets my needs - which sound like yours - just fine. The automated backup to dropbox (wherever) and keeping multiple backups is convenient.
As Jerry P would say "It's good enough".

Doesn't look like a free trial is offered - if you order the cd, you have 60 days to try it out & send it back for a refund if you don't like it. Kind of a pain, but may be the way to go. Jumsoft has a 15 day free trial, but so far it's not doing it for me.
