I need administer my brothers Mac remotely. Will Remote Desktop work? The version on the new App store is $79.99. I also need to be able to install software from my Macs Cd drive to his.

Free solution: Logmein.

I don't know if the free solution allows you to install software, but it would probably be cheaper than Remote Desktop.

But if you want to get Remote Desktop, it is a good solution.

Remote Desktop will do it, but Mac OS X Leopard and higher include screen sharing as a basic feature of the OS for free. Only requirement is that you both run at least 10.5. Search the help file for Screen Sharing for details, but basically you enable the sharing on your brother's Mac in System Preferences and then connect using the network browser or Connect to Server in the Finder.

You can also share your DVD in the other direction, from your Mac to your brother's, to be able to install from it.

Two ways:

1) SSH and / or VNC with open, forwarded port (22 or 5900) on a router

2) Create a VPN with solutions like LogMeIn Hamachi2 (free) or Slink (paid)
