Thunderbird 3.1.7 seems to have changed a feature:

in the past on earlier versions I think Id click on an email's address (from) and a dialog would come up that would permit me to add the adddress to the Personal Address Book

now the options seem to be edit contact compose message to and copy email address

is there a way to get it into the personal address book?

Im on OS 10.5.x
MacPro 2.66 dual 3GB RAM 1.5 TB HD's

Miglia mini HD (Great!)

Choose edit contact then save. Outlook 2011 works like this too.
