Im on OS 10.5.x and thunderbird 3 1 7

it junk button ( ie label email as junk) doesnt seem to be doing the job it has done well in the past.

i get an email from say buy.com, click the junk icon and it moves it into the junk folder but it doesnt do it for the future ones and its done that in the past.

maybe the buy.com email is very clever. but is there a way I can find out whats wrong and get it to work as it has in the past?

Not really, spam and anti-spam filtering are a constant moving target. You might want to consider complaining to your email provider though. Generally speaking it is best to consider the junk mail filtering built into email clients as the very last resort. There are alternate filters that can be installed into various clients, but still, the more you can get the server to filter for you, the better.
