I need a firewall app or something similar that will disconnect an application from the internet if my VPN gets disconnected. I had a look at NetMine but it doesn't seem to give the option of blocking certain connection types (only does port and address).

Any ideas or advice will be gratefully received!

Either Little Snitch or Hands Off! will do the trick.

Hands Off! is part of the current MacUpdate Bundle which includes some good programs.

You could try this router. It gives full firewall controls on each interface (IP, IP ranges, or URLs), bandwidth controls, logs (including attack probes from the internet side) along with enough other features that it has a 700-page user manual.

You could firewall off the entire internet except the IP used by your VPN server. And apply that rule only to your secure computer's LAN IP.
