When I put my iMac to sleep then return to it later, I click on Entourage or a Word file from the Doc. One will open then freeze—usually Entourage. Then the entire Mac freezes, and have to switch off and start up cold. This has happened any number of times. I've occasilonally noticed that the Google and Godaddy email notifier icons occasionally indicate a problem before I go to the Doc, and also the Mac often comes out of sleep for no apparent reason. I'm wondering if these might be clues to the problem.
I've run DiskUtilty, DiskWarrier and AppleJack several times in all modes, and I've also done an archival reinstall. All to no avail. I think the problem began after installing a software bundle and some utilities. So I'm guessing there is a conflict going on. Is there any software available that could help me in searching for such a conflict? Or do MacNN readers have any suggestions I might try to deal with this frustrating problem?
It's an Intel iMac and I have the latest Mac OS and main software updates.

For freezes on wake, I'd look towards hardware issues. If the hard drive isn't spinning up, that could explain your symptoms. Could be the HD is getting weak, or the power supply. When you max out the system, does it sometimes fail? Fire up Handbrake and max out all cores for a few minutes.
Alternatively, bad USB devices can cause wake/sleep issues. Try unplugging everything but a wired keyboard and mouse for awhile.
If you get an actual kernel panic, you can check the panic log for some clues.

Reader50—Thanks for these suggestions. I need a little more help. I used the DiskWarrier HD check and nothing was reported. I'm not familiar with Handbrake, so I'll search for it. I used Spotlight to search for the "panic log" (and kernel panic) but didn't see them. I did have one such panic. When I locate it (with your help!) how should I follow up?
Much appreciated.

/Applications/Utilities/Console.app
Open the log list on left if it isn't already open. Drill down to /Library/Logs/PanicReporter and choose the latest panic log. Post the panic log here for us to study.
Handbrake is a video encoder that can utilize all cores. Use it to open an existing video file, and reencode to a test file.
You could also use a distributed computing client like Folding@home or SETI@home to peg your CPUs at 100%.
DiskWarrior will find problems in the drive directory structure but would not necessarily report on a hardware issue.

I followed your instructions about using Console. There is no panic log listed, so I'm thinking the log of the kernel panic I had was erased when I did the archival reinstall. Neither was there anything reported under CrashReporter, DiagnoticReports, DirectoryService or HangReporter.
I'll check my DiskUtility again. I think it has a hardware check app. If nothing comes of this, I'll wait to see if the kernel panic happens again, and then I'll repost my question with the new info.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

No USB hub, but I have four USB connections: a keyboard, a Brothers all-in-one printer/fax/scanner, an old HP Deskjet printer which is rarely switched on, and the last to my external hard drive.

Check that you have the latest drivers installed for all of those.

That Deskjet sounds suspicious. What happens if you disconnect it?

Oh yes. Conflict Catcher was required software back in the System 7 days. In 7.6 Apple added the Extensions Manager (originally shareware from an Apple employee), which reduced the need a bit, but the automated testing feature kept CC popular until Mac OS X.

Heh. "Automated" testing. More or less, yeah.
Didn't really help with those idiotic conflicts that were solved by alphabetically re-ordering the damn things...
