I am attempting to recover files off of a failing external hard drive onto another external. However, I was hoping to do this folder by folder instead of cloning the entire drive into a disk image. There are files within these folder that are time sensitive and I cannot wait multiple days while the drive clones.

I have spent the past 4 hours trying to grasp the concept of installing ddrescue into my computer and running it. I used the basic 'dd' command in the past and it was pretty simple. ddrescue is a bit more complex for me.

Could someone please guide me through this process step by step please...starting with the installation process??

ddrescue 1.14 is available through MacPorts, have you looked at installing it that way? If you want I can provide you with a disk image installer of ddrescue... It doesn't look like it does folder by folder copying though, it appears to do block level copying similar to dd.

Here you go

After it has been installed you can invoke it by typing in "/opt/local/bin/ddrescue"
