Hope someone can help here and possibly provide a link to the definitive manual on iMovie and how files are handled, moved, sorted etc

The trigger for this is having been on holiday with a new MBA and transferring a lot of DVD clips to that machine.

Now I want to transfer all the clips and project editing done to date to my Mac Pro Tower and work on the big screens

I have tried the Drop Box thing and most of the files (clips) seem to go missing somewhere. If there was a source that clearly outlines how files are manipulated, sorted, filed, deleted, connected, etc etc I would be most appreciative.

One example - I copied some 'events' to a backup drive and then copied those into the Drop Box. The few that actually seemed to have transferred with put into a folder with a duplicate name to one already there - 2011.

A very confusing system to understand to be sure.

Thanks so much in advance

Hmmm - lots of readers and no ideas!

Well let me update my thread and share what I have figured out. When you are trying to move iMovie files from one computer to another, how I did it was to copy the IMovie files to another external HD.

From there I found that the ONLY thing you can put in the iMovie Drop Box are the actual clips themselves, You cannot copy over the thumbs and cache files. They get rejected into an Unused iMovie Drop Box folder.

When you have copied the clips over, the next time you start up iMovie it tells you there are clips in the Drop Box and do you want them installed, When you confirm, the thumb, cache and whatever other files needed are created again on the new machine.

Until you get your fingers in good shape for all this copying (I had over 22 GB to copy) it is a real good idea to make sure Time Machine is on :-) There was one or two occasions when I sorta 'ooops' and lost some clips

Hope this helps. Still would love to know if there is a definitive, clear manual on just how the file construct works in this program

All the best
