i run safari Version 5.0.5 (5533.21.1) on my macpro

10.5.8

frequently it takes a good deal of time to become fully operational, sometime with the home paage not even appearing in the head.

under force quite it says safari is unresponsive. eventually it gets going

why is this? any cure?

many thanks!

Have you tried resetting it (in the Safari menu)? May or may not help.

All browsers can suffer from slowdowns, but I'm getting more and more annoyed by Safari. I'm not even on OS X that often anymore, but Safari just seems like it's becoming a POS; things sound even worse in Lion.

I added 2 x 2 GB RAM and that seems to make it load faster, and so far it has not taken its time

I know that doesnt make much sense.

Any extensions? Check in ~/library/safari/extensions/

Any input managers? Check both user and root library folders.

Perhaps a slight DNS mis-match between your router (if any) and your system settings?

in library/inputmanagers/safari AdBlock/info and Safari Adblock Loader.bundle

I connect direct to FiOS with an ethernet cable, no router.

no issues with firefox or other internet loading.

intermittent. I just wait.

I'd reboot and try again, yes. Safari 5 supports extensions, so you don't want anything in the input managers folder. Delete everything and if Safari seems to work correctly afterwards, then head to https://extensions.apple.com/ and find adblock there.
