I'm finding occasionally ( around 2 days a month) my download mb suddenly shoots up daytime, when I'm on a 10gb daytime limited pcm package.

Night-time is unlimited, which is when I do my downloads.

Normally under 300mb/day, sometimes shoots up to 800mb/day

Probably downloading files in the background, such as BBC iPlayer, (I normally turn off my Airport connection when watching such items daytime, if I remember) but also maybe some updates.

Is there a way to record/log when, and how much, I download either on a minute by minute basis, or on a site / download basis.

My router is password protected, so I'm pretty sure it's just me accessing the Internet.

802.11n WPA/WPA2

TIA.

First thing I'd do is change my password (just to be safe). I haven't seen anything that can log connections...Little Snitch shows current connections...maybe Hands Off! can show a history I dunno.

Is Little Snitch not a viable choice here?

Little Snitch is OK, but I am looking for a log that I can refer back to after noticing a large "Unauthorised" download later on, on my ISP download daily totals .

As far as I am aware, Little Snitch does not block or record a previously "authorised" connection, ie to BBC iPlayer, software updates, etc.

It only monitors at that instant, and does not record size or target / originator of downloads, AFAIK.

Wireshark
Cocoa packet analyzer
Packet peeper

I haven't tried Mac Wireshark in a while, it wasnt easy to get working when I did. The latter two work well last time I checked. Packet capture gives you by the second awareness of traffic. Each line is a packet (max 1500 bytes). The more packets to a host, the more traffic, in simple terms. Scrolling through should let you eyeball those hosts that dominate the traffic, if any. There may be an option to log headers only, otherwise it will store content as well as headers.

I've just tried all 3 you suggest, not really what I am looking for, looking for a more user (ie me) friendly app & display, thanks anyway.

Wireshark offers some graphing functions. A couple of them would break it out by size and destination.

Statistics - The Wireshark Wiki

The kinds of questions you need answered lend themselves to technical analysis, so the tools are built for pros. I don't know of anything easier than Wireshark graphs, but I know easy is a relative term.
