safari bookmarks problem

i have a particular problem with safari bookmarks
it started when i wanted to delete one
easy i thought
just go to the show all bookmarks folder and delete it
but the particular bookmark that i wanted to delete was NOT THERE!
i tried to delete it from the bookmark menu with no result
but my mystery bookmark is still there!
how can i get rid of it?
delete them all and restart?

Exactly where is it? That's important. Is it in the bookmark bar, the bookmark menu, on the desktop, in the Dock...?

it is the first ten that appear
(the most popular?)
but it does NOT appear in the bookmark bar
which is where i would have expected to find them all
