I have a couple of videos I want to convert to mp4 using Handbrake which have separate .srt sub files but whenever I try to attach them in Handbrake it just instantly declares that my encode has finished without creating anything at all.

Anyone got any ideas?

Post your encoding log. No way to know what's happening without it.

That was the entire log. I would literally hit play and the finished dialogue would pop up. Turns out there is a bug when the srt filename is too long. Working now

Spoke too soon. Shortening the filename worked on one, not the other.

That's not the entire log. It's a couple hundred lines long.

Thats what I get from the activity window. It repeats when I hit the go button. Sometimes it only manages 3 frames.

It seems the bug extends to the file path you are saving to as well. Having shortened the filenames of the video and set file it still failed, but having shortened the name of the parent folder for both, it is now happily running and I'll know in about 3 hours if it worked or not.

Thanks anyway.

Spoke too soon. It stopped converting 48 minutes into a 2 hour 10 minute file. Subtitles were working though.

There's no hope for diagnosing these unless you pull the complete log out of the app support file, as described in the instructions I linked to above. We don't even know what version of Handbrake you're using.

Try upgrading to a current build and see if your issue has been fixed in the last 2 years.

Seems odd that an app with nightly builds would update the version on its main site so infrequently. And that it doesn't check for updates within the app.

Latest build seems to have managed the task thanks.

With only 3-4 developers the release schedule is pretty slow.

The automated nightly builds are to get a larger testing crowd and are regarded as unstable to the extent they may be broken from time to time. But I know they're preparing for a release so the nightlies are pretty stable.

LOL. Yeah. 0.9.5 is remarkably more consistent and more stable than 0.9.4 and earlier. Stuff like AC3 encoding is also very welcome. Same with Blu-ray support.

However, they are also removing GUI options as time goes by. I guess it makes sense to simplify things and clean up the GUI, but it can sometimes still be a bit annoying (eg. grayscale).

Even 0.9.5 is a year old at this point, missing a lot of fixes.

I can't wait to see the retarded howling when 0.9.6 is released without a target file size option.

LOL, file size hasn't been a consideration for me for years.

Do people still burn their ripped movies to CDs ?

While I don't use the Target File Size feature, I wonder if there could be some sort of turbo-pass size estimator feature or something like that. I've actually occasionally taken to doing partial encodes at Constant Quality to see what the bitrates might be, and then choose the RF # based on that. (I like to use RF 17, but will increase it 18ish if I think the total bitrates might be over 6ish Mbps for 720p. The AppleTV 2 will choke on some higher bitrate 720p.) I guess I can just use the Average Bitrate feature more in those instances. (I tend to see more artifacting in gradients and backgrounds with 18+, as opposed to 17. And HD encodes over 19 sometimes really bug me.)

BTW, am I the only person that uses grayscale encoding (for B&W of course)?
