not printing in colour...

i wish to print a couple of postcard sized adverts.
i am using Textedit to prepare them.
i have two small areas to print in colour which i correctly (?) set up
BUT when i print them on my old but reliable hp5150 printer
it doesn't print them with colour!
could someone please tell me what i am doing wrong?

Lots more info needed: has this printer ever printed in color? When was the last time you printed in color? Does it need ink/ribbons/etc.? Are you using the latest drivers? Do other color documents print OK? Have you installed or changed anything recently that could cause the problem?

In the print dialog drop-down, make sure your default isn't Fast Draft, Black and White.

yes my printer had a new colour ink fitted and prints 'try' print successfully. i haven't printed any other colour prints yet.
although i hadn't used it
much in the last three months (mostly black and white) nothing had been changed. as far as i know i am using the latest driver, but will check.

i have now downloaded the 'latest' gutenberg printer driver and have tried to install it
but how do i do that?

i have now spent half an hour on the phone with apple help.
after killing my old driver and refitting the latest, not greatest, my printer will STILL not print in colour.
so, i have to give up and buy another?

Which HP series is this printer? Officejet? Photosmart? Deskjet?
The only 5100 series of HP printers I'm seeing supported in either 10.6 or 10.7 are the Photosmart C5100 and D5100 series. Your printer may be too old.

Do other apps print in color? Try saving your textedit file as PDF then print?

unfortunately no. i tried to save as a pdf, but it still doesn't print in colour.
Apple have really let us users down.
i have now bought an hp 5110 to start again.
a prevoiusly colourless greg
