My wife deleted (moved to trash, emptied trash) her entire iphoto picture library. Is there any way to get it back? It contained years of family photos.

thanks.

There are a few software solutions, paid for, can't remember their names, need to do a Google search, preferably with another computer.

Don't use the "iPhoto" computer anymore unless you have to until you have recovered photo's to prevent overwriting of data.

DataRescue is one option.

Whatever you decide upon, you're looking at a massive mountain of work and random data to sift through and sort for relevance.

But yes, it is imperative that you stop using the computer entirely, as every minute of use increases the likelihood that data will be overwritten by temporary files.

Also, please never make the mistake of not running a regular backup, ever again.

I don't understand how you can have Time Machine set up, but "she wasn't using it." All you have to do is have TM set up and it works automatically, unless you're saying that she actually went in and turned it off.

I have my Time Machine powered from a switched power source, so it's not on all the time, it does make a slight noise.

Powered up once or twice a day, unless a large software update is pending, perhaps she had hers switched off.

But then I also backup to USB flash, DVD, email "Cloud" etc fairly often also, especially photo's and Excel.

I also used to back-up wife's iMac for her, and regularly network the two with each others photo's, data etc.

I wouldn't recommend Data Rescue, by the way. It's a little rough for what it is. R-Studio for mac has been pretty good for mac hard drive recovery purposes, as far as we've seen.

Interesting...what about Data Rescue causes you to recommend against it? I've not heard of R-Studio before, but Data Rescue has a solid track record.
