Excel files read wrong in Windows

When I send an Excel file to a friend who uses a Windows 7 machine, he can open the file up, but it has formating issues, and when copying some of the cells to a new spreadsheet, Windows will crash Excel when he tries to save the new file with the copied cells.

Anyone had this issue before, and know how to solve it?

What versions of Excel on both platforms? Is it an older style .xls file or a newer .xlsx? What kind of formatting issues? What exactly is being copied that causes the problem?

More details needed.
