Fresh install of a Mac, iLife 11 from dvd. OK so far. Software update, yup, all good.

Fire up iPhoto. Newer version required to run with 10.7.4, "go to software update to download and install the latest version." Software update says all apps are up to date.

Go to App store, iPhoto updates available. "This copy of iPhoto was not purchased from the app store"

Given that I'm doing fresh installs of customer MAcs all the time, this is now a repeating and very annoying cluster f**k from Apple.

It seems even if a customer has a purchased and legal copy of iLife on DVD, Apple want you to buy the apps again online just to make updating work.

Luckily (for now) all the iPhoto updates are available on the Apple download pages, but even then rather than a decent combo updater you have to sift through multiple updates in order, in a proper Microsoft Office update style.

I do have to say as a repair tech Apple seem to be very dedicated to making life more and more difficult for non apple store upgrades and repairs.

Non-App Store iPhoto is updated through the software update in the Apple menu.

The only Apple software to date that forces you to re-buy is MainStage. Software Update only brings that to 2.1.

I know. This doesn't explain why software update seems to want to ignore iPhoto applications installed by DVD now.
