Hey!

I recorded some DVDs with my TV DVD recorder and I have two questions regarding this:

Is there a simple way to duplicate a DVD with a Mac? (free)
Is there any way to copy the DVD content to a Mac so you no longer need the disc?

(I hope this is legal; I'm always worried. If this is troublesome, just remove it.)

Thanks in advance!
Pete

1. You can duplicate a disk using Disk Utility (Festplatten-Dienstprogramm <-- stupid name; should be "Laufwerks-Dienstprogramm" since it deals with disks of all kinds. Morons.)

a) On the left, click on the disk.
b) at the top, click "new image" and save that.
c) burn the image to disk.

Works with any optical disk.

2.) HandBrake

You can clone the entire disk in Disk Utility.

Either you make a disk image in the same place in Disk Utility, or you just copy the VIDEO_TS folder from the DVD. Either way you can play the DVD in the DVD-player.

If your copy is legal to begin with and you don't distribute the copies you make, this is legal. The only wrinkle is the circumvention device idiocy in DMCA/EUCD, but the advice above doesn't help if your DVD is copy protected anyway.
The current Mac Pro is the most out-of-date Mac since the Macintosh Portable

Do make sure you've FINALISED the DVDs on the DVD recorder, before you try and copy them or move them onto your Mac.

Movie DVD Copy is also a good choice. Never miss backing up a DVD with Movie DVD Copy. And if you just make copies to your computer, DVDSmith is freeware and can meets your requirements.
