G'day all...
Just a quick question about saving Illustrator 9 and 10 files. I work at a newspaper in Australia, on a Mac, and currently use Illustrator 7. We currently save our final work as an "8-bit IBM PC EPS" file so the subs on the other side of the building can call our work into thier pages on their PCs. We are looking at going to Illustrator 10 in the near future, but have found you can't just go "Save as EPS > 8-bit IBM PC" in versions 9 and 10 anymore...
Does anyone know of a way to save an EPS file on a Mac, so the PCs can use it. Maybe there's a way via a plug-in or some other means that we haven't yet discovered.....?? Any ideas would be great...!!
Cheers..

Not sure if this helps you, but I have the reverse problem. I have a client who uses Illustrator 10 on the PC, and I have Illustrator 8 on my Mac. When they send me either native or EPS formats from the default save option in 10, I can't open the files on my Mac. I have to get them to "save as" Illustrator 8.
Perhaps you could save as a older version file from Illustrator 10, then see if it can be used on the PC.

Thanks Macola...
Already tried that unfortunately.... When saving in 9 and 10 it still dosen't give you the extra option box to be able to select "save as PC 8-bit etc etc" ..... you still only see whats available for 10.
Thanks anyway...!!

Is there a reason your PC users need it saved that way? In my experiences an EPS should open within the same application regardless of platform. Although I do realize that might not be the most cost effctive means to translate the files. Your PC users may need Illustrator on thier end. Either this or make PDF files.

I think the 8 bit PC is only in reference to the preview of the EPS..
in AI10, you have the option of 8 bit tif and 8 bit mac preview..
can you just save with an 8 bit tiff preview?

I don't think it matters what preview you use (that's what the 8-bit vs. 1-bit, PICT vs TIFF etc. does). I think the change was that version 10 always saves EPS files with a TIFF preview, that's why it won't let you select any other options. However, I've found that as long as you save as an Illustrator 8 (or earlier) file, then it works on both platforms.

What are you all smoking? Illustrator 10 on a mac has the ability to save as an EPS, then in the prompt window with compatibility version numbers you can choose your preview as Mac Black/White, Tiff BW/color (PC compatible).
Then all you need is a postscript printer and an application that handles eps files. I just tested it by saving to a tiff/bw and tiff/8bit color and then opened Quark on a PC and placed the images. It works just like a charm.
What's the fuss? Here's a link the the image of the dialog.
