I'm using Illustrator 10 on OS X, and it is being a PAIN IN THE ASS! I'm working on the map again, and i've been joining lines together all night, and like randomly some lines just won't join! I have two right now that won't join no matter what! The points are on top of each other, I even used the average command to make sure of it. It still gives me that friggin BS message about point and doesn't join them! Illustrator 10 has been a pain like this since the beginning and it is really starting to piss me off!

Make sure you only have 2 points. If there is a duplicate point or even a duplicat line in the exact same place, on top of the 2 that you are trying to join, it will error. Try single selcting on the line, don't drag a selection, and delete twice. If the line is still there, then there was a duplicate. If it all disappears, then it is someting else. If it's just a point, you can go to keyline mode (command-Y), and look for a little x for a stray point. Using smart guides can help to identify. (command-U)

If it is empty stray paths, then you could to a cleanup for stray paths. Object | Path | Clean-up. I always uncheck unpainted objects.

Hope this helps.

Unfortunately it does not, as i had no duplicate objects, and no stray points. I had two lines, who's ends intersected. Thats it. And the program just wouldn't join them for me.

Another problem is if the lines or points are grouped with other objects, and not together. I've never ran into this issue before where it wasn't one of the three problems that I've outlined. There's been plenty of times that I thought I had no duplicates, but found them nonetheless.

Sorry for not being able to help.

Turns out there was a stray point on top of the other two, but where did it come from? I drew two lines and stuck their ends together, where could this stray point have possibly came from? Is there a bug in illustrator that somehow creates these things?

I don't think there is a bug that produces stray points. However, you say that your working on a map. I'm assuming there are lots of lines that you have drawn. If you've ever duplicated a line, on purpose, accident, whatever, and use the single select tool, and deleted only once, it leaves an empty point.

other possibility: you selected the pen tool to draw lines, put a point down, then noticed something else, switched tools, forgot about point.

Could be a bunch of others. I'm pretty sure I've executed all of them. What's important is that you now know the only ways to get that particular error, and what to check for to fix it.

I believe that is what was happening. It seems to me Adobe need to come up with some better and more creative ways to handle vector art. Just doing a map is becoming very difficult. There must be easier ways to do this.

Maps are one of the easyest things to do in Illustrator...I have been using Illustrator for over 9 years and I have never had a problem like you explained.

What are you doing. How are you creating the map...explain in full and I'll explain the correct way.

Oh sir I am so stupid. Can you ever forgive me? I don't know what I'm doing! I've been doing everything wrong I'm such an idiot. I bow before you master of Illustrator!

I'm completely redrawing this map over in illustrator. Every road, fire road, trail, everything thats on the map besides the contour lines. And I'm adding trails and roads that that map is missing, and also correcting areas that are inaccurate. My document size is the same size as that map, approximately 24 inches wide.

So what the fück is your problem? Why are you such a shït head? Is it just because I'm a good ol' American, or is it because someone else around here knows illustrator besides you? I could tell you how I'm drawing this map, but I would much rather go tell you to GO FÜCK OFF!

msc1974, no need to be condescending. saying things like:

isn't helpful.

After reading and looking at your resume and your portfolio...you really need all the help people could give you. If you can't take peoples comments/advice (even if you don't like the comments) you'll be back parking cars before you know it.
Good luck with the map...

Its not comments I have a problem with, its ässholes with attitudes that think they are better than everyone else, that I have a problem with.
Why do you even come to these forums just so you can go around talking down to people so you can try and make yourself feel good?
