I'm a student, learning editing/prepress work. I would like to expand the meager collection of fonts I have on my Mac, but have discovered, to my disappointment, that fonts are a lot more expensive than I somehow imagined them to be (I seem to remember when, as a kid, my dad could buy a disk with about 1 or 2 hundred fonts for less than $100).

Are there are affordable sources out there for quality fonts? Academic pricing?

It seems most are priced for corporate clients and multiple computers, which doesn't apply to me at all.

Several of the Adobe Applications come bundled with some fonts, but I think your best bet is to "acquire them" through a "foot in the door" job in Graphics.

But remember I never told you to steal anything
"Devil ether, it makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel. Total loss of all basic motor skills. Blurred vision. No balance. Numb Tongue. The mind recoills in horror. Unable to communicate with the spinal column. Which is interresting, because you can watch yourself behaving in this terrible way, but you can't control it"

hehe was so happy to see helvetica neue on my powerbook when i got it the other day (first mac and all) so that saves me splashing out for that again.

You can still buy disks with several thousand fonts on, but no one ever said they'd be worth using
