I'm looking for a scanner that will do negatives. I wa browsing the Apple Store site and noticed that the Canon one works under X, but required Photoshop 7. I have elements and was wondering if it had the same scanner driver as the full PS. Thanks,

I just bought the Epson 2450 and it does excellent scans from negatives. It can gang up about 10 and scan them in sucession if they are on the same strip.
It has firewire and usb interfaces and runs in classic 9, os9 or x. I couldn't be happier with it. The drivers have enough tweak setting and ability to save settings for the future.
I suggest going to a store and trying them both out with their drivers and software. Mine came with elements.

I have the Canon LiDE 20, and the driver is in fact a Photoshop plug-in, not a TWAIN driver. Incredibly stupid, but it will work in any app that supports Photoshop plug-ins, like PS Elements or Graphic Converter. Since it isn't TWAIN, Image Capture can't see the scanner. The Canon Toolbox is Classic only and has to be installed while booted in to OS 9.
I should add that I realize you're talking about a more high-end scanner, but it's the same story. BTW, I use Elements and I use this driver in that app without any problems. (Well, it has one bug where if you try to close the scanning window without touching anything else first, the window will just disappear. Essentially, the plug-in crashes, not PS though. And subsequent behavior is normal.)

last year i bought a umax. it was a freakin' nightmare. straight out of the box it wouldn't scan slides. it seems there was a problem with the extra lamp...anyway, umax told me to send it to them and they'd fix / replace it. they wanted me to cover mailing costs and could not guarantee when it would be returned. fortunately my reseller, microcenter, exchanged the unit for an hp scanner. i love the hp and will never buy a umax product again -- because the thing was a piece of **** and because their customer service is horrible.
