I want to buy a digital camera. I'd like to spend about 500 US. Any thoughts? What to get, what to avoid?
I'm sure there must be threads on this already, but the search function doesn't seem to be working...

I swear by the olympus's personally, but I recently saw my friends coolpix 3500 and the picture quality blew me away. I think I'll be making it my next camera. see: Nikon's Site (3500)

Important considerations;
1. Recharger and battery
2. Compact flash memory cards (smartmedia low capacity and outdated, memory stick low capacity and expensive, sd/mmc expensive)
3. Check Optical Zoom, some cameras report 6 or 10x zoom when they only have 3x optical and the rest is digital. Don't be sucked in!
Nikons cameras are all excellent, Pentax are good too, look out for the new Canon ixus v3 in your price range.
The coolpix 4500 mentioned above is one of my favourites at the moment;
Tough Mag Alloy body, CF Cards, 4x zoom (38-115mm equivalent) Swivel Screen (photograph your own backside if you wish), great macro and takes a full range of accessory lenses for great expandability.
With add on lenses you can have an 8mm fisheye and potential for 25-450mm as well as slide copier, add on flash and macro coollight. Pros are using this camera

The cammera stil worked but the bottom of the LCD was just white.

Did I mention, the Nikon has a Magnesium Alloy body.
I still wouldn't recommend dropping it , but the camera is tougher than most.
Internal focusing protects the lens too.
On the subject of Fuji, the 602 has 640x480 video with sound.
Fuji use SmartMedia though which only goes to 128MB and is possibly at the end of its life. ie they aint gonna make/develop the format much longer.

I have a little $400 sony cybercam.
I however need a new one. Why? I build models and need to shoot close ups of cockpits, instrument panels, etc. The sony is not cutting it; it loses focus at about 4 inches.
Can anyone out there recommend a good camera for extreme close ups?
