Hi all,
I'm setting up a Mac environment for graphics and DTP work, and I was hoping someone here could offer some advice.
We're setting up two 867 dual PMs for use with the following apps:
Illustrator 9.0
QuarkXpress 4.1
FrameMaker 6.0
Photoshop 6.0
Adobe Acrobat 5.0
(I'm aware these aren't the latest incarnations, but this is what we'll use for the nearest future.)
All of these are OS 9 versions (except maybe Acrobat). Now, are there any reasons you as experienced users/professionals would not recommend using these apps via Classic aside for speed issues? Are there any particular things I need to know here?
Secondly. We are in doubt as to what works best. OS 9 and X on separate partitions or a mixed partition with both OSes. Will either of the alternatives have any positive/negative effect on any of the above apps?
I'm aware that professionals still prefer to stay in 9, particularly because of performance issues.
I would be very interested to hear from users that are working with DTP/graphics via Classic.
For different reasons, we would like to keep as much as possible of the workflow on X and avoid having to constantly boot into 9. We will not be running any heavy Photoshop-filters or anything, but occasionally we will be working with 500+ MB layered images.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I guess i'm not sure why you want to use OS X when all your apps will be running in classic?
I personally find classic to be much less stable than OS9, granted it doesn't bring down the whole machine, but usually the entire classic environment.
I don't think you will run into any show stopping bugs, maybe just more frustrations.
what do you hope to gain by running OS X on these machines that will basically be running all their apps in classic? if it's stability, I would really do some testing and think abou it.
I would suggest you wait until you can afford to purchase the OS X versions of the apps (Minus Quark of course..arrrgh).
that's my $.02

If all your apps are in classic, there is no reason to run them through X. Its a major speed hit, you gain no bonuses like memory management, protected memory, stability, dual processor awareness, etc. by running them in classic. You'll no doubt get lots of screen rendering/redraw issues, as this happens alot in classic, and stability goes out the window. its not recommended. run X when you upgrade your applications, there is no point in doing so earlier.
