How do i allocate more memory to illustrator. I know how to do it in photoshop under the preferences, but cant find it in photoshop. I am getting "not enough memory" error when tryin to apply a filter.
Some other info if needed, Im working with a 667 pb with 512 ram.
Doing work on a 89 mb file. should i try to decrease file size? Its a file with high-rez photo on on layer that i want to keep the high quality on.
I am a huge illustrator , photoshop and all that stuff NEWBIE, so if any of this sounds stupid, sorry

the same way you allocate any memory on any app on macs. (os9 at least.)
find the application icon, hit apple(cmd)-i to get the get info window. Pull the pulldown til it says memory. Change the numbers to be what you want.
Then proceed.

I would say get more ram
512 is reasonable, but if you want to do huge file work. 1 gig ram will make your life easier

I tried the first suggestion, but i am using OSX,
I want to get more ram soon, but i cant at the moment since I dont have much money. I used it all getting legit software, seeing as I hope to do this for a living one day.
Anyway, any other suggestions?,

you shouldn't really have to be allocating memory to applications under osx. That being said you are probably running out of scratch disk space and/or X is acting puhwunky and/or its a bug. make sure you are running the latest bug fix update and check adobes troubleshooting forums. free up some space on your scratch disk (which you can change under the Illustrator Preferences menu item)

Use the filter on the image in Photoshop and place it in Illustrator.
How high res is the photo? And what are you using it for?
There's really no need to have more than 200 pixels/inch unless you're printing to 4-color press.

I decided to just do it in photoshop. I'm new to this. I used a black and white photo that i took and scanned. The image was scanned at 300dpi. I guess that was overkill
