Have the layer you want to use as a clipping layer directly above the layer you want to clip. Opt Click the little bar between the two layers in the layers pallette, the cursor will show two little circles. The top layer will appear indented in the layers list and have a little bent arrow in front of it's name. The top layer will be clipped according to the transparency of the layer below it.

I'm trying to use black and white to mask another layer, not transparency of a layer to mask.

OK, this will do the job but the mask won't move with the masking layer, you will need to redo each time you move the masking layer (ML™). Select all the black in the ML™, now while the selection is active, click on the layer you want to mask. Now click on the 'create mask' button at the bottom of the layers pallette. Now hide the ML™. If the mask is inverted ( I can't remember if you select the black or the white), then click on the newly created layer mask and invert it. If the edges are a bit harsh, then bllur the mask a bit (Gaussian blur). Hope that helps.

eh?

Just Command(applekey) Click the layer you want to use as a mask (this will select the outline of the layers transparency). Then go to the layer you want masked and hit the Add Layer Mask button on the bottom of the Layers Pallet. Voila...The mask will be created with the selection you made from the first layer.

I think thats what you want to do anyway.

Copy the layer you intend to be the mask. Then on the layer you want masked:

create a new reveal all mask
press \
paste the image
press \ again

Voila.
