I am a graphics newbie. I have been searching for a simple way to make grid patterns to overlay images. I found several websites that said to create the vertical/horizontal image in an appropriately sized image (20 x 20 px). They then say to save/swatch it.

This works fine...but it doesn't transport to another document. No matter what I do, I can't get the swatch created this way to come into the swatch menu of another illustrator document.

What am I doing wrong?

You can make your own swatches pallete. It's pretty easy. All you have to do is make a file, I'll call mine swatches.ai, and make whatever swatches in it that I want to use in my documents.

Now if I want to use my custom swatches from "swatches.ai", all I have to do is go to the Window>Swatch Library>Other Library

that will pull up a file picker, and you just browse to your swatches.ai, and it will create another swatchpallet for you.

Now I haven't tested this next part, but it should work. If you want your own swatches pallet to be your default just go to '/Applications/Adobe Illustrator 10/Presets/Swatches/'

and replace the default swatches with yours. Don't forget to back up your old defaults in case soomething goes amiss

hope this helps.
