Can anyone recommend a good >$200 printer? Canon, Epson, HP, Lexmark? How do the printers in this price range compare to Apple's Personal LaserWriter? At the time I know that ink jet printers were really bad quality wise. I don't anything professional level, but I want to make good quality prints (don't we all? ). I plan on printing text, websites, some InDesign files. Good color and good text printing are imperative. Being supported by OS X etc... Border free printing would be nice, but not needed. Thanks for any input

HP Photosmart 7150
-or-
HP Deskjet 5550
I recommend either one for photos. If speed is what your after, I would choose the 5550. 17ppm for black compared to about 14ppm black on the 7150. Both use 3 different ink cartridges, a black, color, and photo cartridge, but only 2 at a time. You can switch out the black and photo, depending on what your doing: a lot of text or a lot of photos. The advantage of the 7150 though is the fact that if you also have an HP 812 digital camera, you can plug it into the front of the printer and print pictures off the camera without using the computer. (I only know this info cause I work at Staples up here and I have an HP product guide )
Now, if you don't have the HP camera and use a camera with memory cards, the HP Photosmart 7350 or 7550 is what I would also recommend. The 7350 is basically the 7150 but has slots for 4 different media cards where you plug the card into the printer, choose the pics you want to print, select the size (4x6, 8x10) and then print. The 7550 does that as well, but it also has a small color LCD screen so you can see the pics, zoom in, edit a little bit, change rotation...as well as it uses all 3 ink cartridges at once so you don't have to worry about switching any out.
Cost per cartridge:
Black: $19.99
Color: $34.99
Photo: $24.99
The black and color ink cartridges can yield about 400 pages each while the photo cartridge can produce 125 4x6 prints. Hope this helps!

I really like the looks of the HPs but the "mediocre text" thing kind of drives me away. I am thinking of an Epson S820 which I actually believe is what used to come with the consumer macs. I had someone print something for me before and I was satisfied with the quality of the text. Speed isn't really that much of a problem for me though. They talk about how when you don't use the photo paper, the quality somewhat deteriorates. Is this just with photos or also with graphics and text? Anyone have any stats on how many photos/papers (just text)/graphics you can print? Thanks for your help

Canon S820
Ok I was wrong.. Stylus 820 and Canon S820. Since I made the mistake... Which is better? Though I don't think I saw Epson on that site. Also anyone know anything about computersforsure.com? They have the Canon S820 for the cheapest and are part of Office Depot/Max.. don't remember. But I have never heard of them. Trustworthy? Again, thanks

i have the canon s820. beautiful color. text is good, but black and white images aren't. i think i uses a composit black instead of true (only black) but it's only when it over a large area that it's noticible.
the pain in the ass thing about canon is that you'd be hard pressed to find a store that has one that can print samples or even has samples that have been 'printed' on the printer.
anyways, staples had it for 199$ + a 50$ rebate
