Could anyone point me towards a typeface (preferably freeware) that looks like it came off an 18th-century-or-so printing press? Maybe something a bit irregular and a little on the heavy side? Thanks.

Well, Garamond does a pretty good job of looking old/classic(al) though maybe it's too plain for what you want. Cochin also looks olde but goode, and it's included in a standard OS X install if you're using that.
Are you looking for something scriptish or just serif?

Thanks for the suggestions. To be perfectly honest, I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for. I think something along the lines of those fonts that look like they were produced by an old worn out typewriter, but not quite. What I have in mind is a typeface that's perhaps less than crisp, like you might find on an old broadside. Maybe an effect that makes it look like the ink bled a bit. Or maybe something like carefully hand-printed lettering in an old diagram or map.

Check out the Hoefler Historical Allsorts:

-------
For a less expensive approach check out Chank Diesel at:

He might have something that fits the bill.

Aha! Exactly. If only I could afford it ... well, I will search through the various font archives. Thanks.

Dude, you must check out 'Poplar' from the Adobe WoodType Series. What is BuonRotto thinking... Garamond? C'mon! Ick! Sorry Buon!
