Hey there,
How do you pull of the following effect seen on Panic's website:

http://www.panic.com/

In the "Panic At Macworld" image; the effect whereby a potion of the image is in sharp focus, but the image gets more blurred as it gets further away from the sharp, focused point? Either getting more blurred "radially" (like an iris effect) or "horizontally" (out left/right).

Thanks,
BD

1. Make a circular selection with either the oval selection tool (click and hold on the rectangle to select the oval tool) or use the lasso to make a rough area for your sharp focus.

2. Go to "select->feather" and depending on the resolution of your image you should select a wide range or narrow range. If you have a high resolution image you may want extend the feathering while in quick-mask mode. INVERT your selection to now select the area you want to blur.

3. Go into QuickMask Mode simply to preview your selection(it is below your color selection on the tools palette) and look at the feathered mask. If it is nice and smooth then you can use a radial or gaussian blur with this mask) If you want it to be a greater/smoother transition you can go to the gaussian blur filter on the 'mask' you've created to smooth out the transition.

4. Switch back out of quickmask and do your filter blur effect as desired.

That's about it! Hope this text explanation makes sense.

Hey bluedog,
Thanks a ton for the Reply. Looks like I'm going to have to play around with the variables (Selection size, Feather amount, Blur type/amount) to get what I need. But you've definitely set me on the right path.

See ya,
BD
