I have a dsc-s75 digi cam, and i would like to get my pictures printed out to there best quality. The pictures are 2048x1536 in non compressed jpeg 72dpi.... When i load them up into photoshop, what is the best way to optimize them for print? Just an ordinary inkjet printer, nothing special, but I would like it to be 300dpi cause I'm working on a poster which is set to 300dpi, so I'm not sure whats the best way to get this picture into my poster so that it will come out excellent when sent to the printer, any ideas? doesn't converting the picture from 72 dpi to 300 dpi result in loss of quality though, i'm kind of confused on this matter so if anyone can answer me, I'd much greatly appreciate it.

No but what it'll do is shrink the photo. At 72 dots per inch, your image is roughly 28 x 21 inches (2048x1536/72 in each dimension). Making the image 300 dpi (2048x1536/300 in each dimension) will downscale it to 6.8 x 5.12 inches (assuming you haven't cropped it at all).

If your poster will be printed on an inkjet, you can go down to 240 dpi.

February's Macworld has a good primer about resolutions and such if you can find one on a newstand somewhere.

I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

surprisingly you could probably get away with 240 dpi, I know I have on a few ads on more than one occasion. (never EVER send measure proportions for drum scanning 15 minutes before happy hour, you are bound to **** something up. ) Go to image size (in photoshop) uncheck resample, insert 300 into the dots per inch slot and the result is how small you have to shrink your image to get 300 dpi.
