I'll eventually be doing freelance, mostly print, maybe some web and definitely some personal stuff in illustrator/photoshop. Where would I start building a font collection? I have not worked close enuff w/ a studio or other artists to get any idea/direction. thx

Let me clarify. I'm not looking for sites to find fonts (which is helpful) but more of a strategy as to what I should add to what Adobe already offers in their programs. For example, are there certain styles you MUST have, are their groups of fonts you recommend, t=etc. Forgive my ignorance, I haven't taken Typography class yet where I'm sure all my questions will be answered. thx

You're joking right? If you're on X, and need some serious font management, Suitcase is already up to version 10.2.1...

Ok if it works for youthough.
Always on the run...

always happy to help a buckeye.

the answer to your question is that there's no specific answer. it all depends upon your needs. i suggest you look for fonts you like and buy them as your budget will allow. then, as time goes by, i suggest you look for and buy fonts on a job-by-job basis. today you might need the hoefler fonts ( a GREAT collection ), tomorrow you might find that rosewood is good for a theme your working with.

a font colection is built over time and experience. it should not be based on what's hot because that changes with the direction of the wind.

i once read an interview with fred woodward, art director and designer for rolling stone. he said his goal was to use every font ever designed. imo that is a great outlook on typography. every font has a place and a use. the challenge is whether we can identify and use them appropriately.

please post any and all questions.

i know you said you weren't looking for font sites but thought i'd mention chank diesel. his site, www.chank.com, is a treasure trove of wonderful faces and he gives out a lot of free fonts. check him out, it may get your collection started.

not joking... 10.1.3 works great and I was reading the reviews for 10.2.x and it seems to suck for a lot of people...

might do it someday but for now I'm ok... and more importantly I'm happy
