Quark 5 / Book design question...

I have a book design job. It was started by another designer, who dropped it. He has the Quark 5 files and Pictures in a weird structure I haven't seen before.
The book is over 240 pages long. There is the main folder. Then within that, 6 other folders. Within each is a .qxd document (pages 1-18) and a Pictures folder with the linked images for that .qxd file.
Now the client wants to add more photos and copy. I have always seen (in most cases, haven't done much book design work) a main folder, within that a single Quark file and Pictures folder. Nothing like this.
So I want to basically join all the pages from the other .qxds and create one .qxd for the whole book and one separate Pictures folder.
Is this feasable? The right course to take? Right now this current structure is confusing and will, in the long run with editing and adding photos get even more problematic. I think...
Any tips, thoughts or advice would be appreciated.

Is the book divided in chapters or so? Probably each folder contains a chapter of the book (a qxd file) with all the images used in that chapter. That, instead of confusing, could help, because once you figure out what is in each folder, then you can have your work organized
I've done that before working as a team and then, when everybody is done with his part, we put everything together in the main file.
At the end, when you collect for output, you'll have your qxd file and the Images folder with all the iamges used in the book.

True. I believe that's the case. Maybe you're right. I thought that since I alone am working on it that I could have the whole book in one .qxd. Without having to jump from one folder to another. I will keep the original set up. But I think I'll try the other way. Just to see what will happen as far as numbering, text flow and other tools that Quark has.
Do printers/service bureaus prefer a certain set up over another?
Thanks.
