How cheap do you want? Like $50, or a cheap used Digital SLR ($2000)

Go with the canon I had the sony and even though the focusing was top notch, the sony left a blue shadowing on all the pictures. (I also have a Nikon 5700 which takes pictures way better then the sony did, although the low light focusing in the Nikon is not as good as the Sony, but better prints is better than night focusing) My friend has the Canon and loves it (it puts out great prints also) One thing about the sony i hate is storage, shooting in TIFF on say a 256MB card you get about 30 shots. With the sony and sony memory stick cards whats the largest card sony makes for the F717 (256? 512?) Now think about storage for the Canon (or Nikon) the new compact flash cards go up to 3GB. Trust me when your shoooting in TIFF or RAW and you have to constantly change out cards you get really annoyed. (ditch the crappy sony and go for the canon, nikon, or olympus youll be glad you did)
Thats my two cents worth!!!

I've found that Broadway Photo usually has good prices. You might also want to try My Simon for price comparisons.

I've been considering doing this thread myself...
I want to get a kick but Digital for a resonable price...
I've considered the Canon EOS-10D but lets face it even at the kick but price of $1500 it's gonna make me eat peanut butter and crackers for a few weeks... then I might be able to afford my first lens
So I was going to get the Nikon 5700 but I want to use a wideangle lens and from what I've read the Wide lens is as big as the camera and only brings it down to a 35mm...
but the Nikon 5000 can use a Wide that will do 18mm (I think) for $200 bucks less... so I lose the 8x zoom but I think it might be worth it...
So that's what I've reserached but I'm still trying to find the right camera...
$700-$1000
must be a SLR (just so much cooler)
must be abel to do pretty good Wide angle
I've looked at:
www.ritzcamera.com
www.bhphotovideo.com
any sugestions on cameras and places to buy?

i bought my Canon Ixus v3 from this company, cheaper than high-street prices, even with an extra 64Mb card. Lovely camera as well... the only thing i have to complain about is the limited zoom (x 2 optical) and the lack of remaining battery indication.
Forgot to say, got next day delivery as well.. but i live in the UK.

Quote from graphics84:

Actually the lens that is built on the Nikon 5700 is the equiv. to 35-280mm in 35mm format. The WC-E80 widens the lens range down to 28mm which is great.
As far as the Fuji S1 graphics84, dont do it. (if you want a good SLR Digital go for the Nikon D100, or wait for the Pentax *ist or go for all in one bodies like the Nikon 5700, the Minolta DiMAGE 7i, or the Olympus E-20n)
As far as buying. Try here:
ttp://www.dbuys.com/
(some of the prices you will find, and from other photographers ive talked with there very reliable and not shady)
I bought my Nikon 5700 from Broadway Photo, and they are scam artists, but im lucky, since i did not get burned (the sold me a Grey Market model, how do I know? Well the USA version of the Nikon 5700 comes with a 16MB compact flash card, while the europe/asia model comes with a 32MB card. Guess what mine came with? thats right the 32MB. Same camera, all I had to do was change the language pref. in the menu.)
Just remember cheaper is not always safer.

Here's another great site for digital camera hunting. They have incredibly detailed (yet user-friendly) reviews and recommendations.
