I'm trying make a glossy white shield shape that has the effect of apple's logo

I can create aqua style widgets in photoshop, but getting this sort of complex effect is proving difficult.

Can anyone help?

What do you have so far? Which part are you stuck on? It's basically layers of shadow and gradients, overlapping each other. If I can see what you have so far, I can try to tell you where to start.

So far I have this:

Done in Illustrator just a basic shape with a plain gradient mask on it, it obviously needs more layers, and it is probably a bit dark - I want it as light as possible, but still so it stands out on a white background (its for a logo).

Thanks for the help.

It looks like you almost got it, probably just a drop shadow, and a stronger outline layer.
I found this tutorial, that I've used before. I think once you add a drop shadow, it will look good. An outline layer will also help it stand out as well.

You have to try to visualize in your mind what shape the reflection would make if you shined a light on it. You've got a great start. Heres a couple of things you might add.

The bottom glow helps a lot. I made the highlight a bit lighter too. Also, I made the grey slightly darker, cause the glow didn't pop enough for me.

If you feel like it, you can download the psd to look at my layers by option clicking this link

That link doesn't seem to work from here, but if you paste it into your url, then you can right click and say save to disk, and it should work. Its there, it just didn't work like I expected it to.

Sorry, I meant to reply sooner.

Thanks for the help Deathman and DesignerTerp I really do appreciate it.

I followed the tutorial at xicons which was pretty good, and I'll also download that psd file (thanks man) and have a look.

Thanks again guys

Hi guys, I am facing a similar problem. May be you could help me. First, I have followed your helpful directions and I'm close to get it right, but...

I am working with a circular photo, I wanted to make it appear as if a water drop is completely covering it. So it looks as if it is being augmented (more in the center than in the borders).

The main problem is that by setting foreground color as white, the intense red-yellow colors in the picture almost disappear or get diffused. Do you have any ideas?

I should have tell you than I'm not a graphic designer, just a microbiologist working on a figure for a poster that will be presented in DC on May 22. My goal is to convert a 2D microscope color photo of a yeast cell, appear as if it is 3D.

Thanks a lot

Hey there,
That tutorial is fine for making geometric shapes, but does anyone know how to make letters do this? As for 10.3:

Panther "X"

Thanks!
BD

* I tried to insert "Image" but nothing came up

The newest photoshop user has the tutorial on how to make Panther X effect. Go to your local book store and look for that magazine.

Aw, c'mon! Someone asks how to do something, and you point them to a piece of printed material? Much less one that the person has to BUY? That's not what this here internet is all about, buddy...

Well,
That is good advice... but being that I don't happen to have the latest Photoshop User handy at this minute, is there anywhere else on the web that has the same information?

Thanks,
BD

Umm,
No - not in this month's Photoshop User issue (100 Tips, etc.). If anyone can lend me a hand - that'd be great.

Thanks,

If you're talking about the brushed metal look, take a look at this:

Brushed Metal Tutorial

The lighting, and the shadowing is just experience. Experiment to your liking.

The Aqua:

Aqua Tutorial (in German)

This should help. Sherlock should be able to translate nicely for you.

Hope that helps.
Regards.
