Posted about 5 months ago concerning low end publishing programs. I have been a MS Publisher user for years. It has been able to do what I wanted: Newsletter, mailings, brochures, letterhead/business card design, and church bulletins. Really like the page layout and working with text frames.
What would you recommend for the Mac?
I have an iBook and continue to use it more and more. I've worked around with WORD and just find it a little more complicated (more steps) than I've been used to. Also, I'd like a little more flexibility with graphics.
I could possibly get Adobe Indesign for the teacher rate this fall, but that doesn't help me now. Would Indesign be more than what I need? Is there are steeper learning curve?
Anyway, I'm very much open to suggestions and would love to hear what you think is good or bad about some of the cheaper (under $200) programs for basic publishing.

Try MacPublisher Pro. It's inexpensive and does a pretty good job. You can go to their site and sownload a demo. CompUSA has it on their shelf.

There are a lot of possibilities, but they're not cheap.
MacPublisher Pro may be good. I've found for simple things, AppleWorks' Draw documents are pretty good for careful placement and versatility.
You could also consider Corel Graphics Suite 11 which would give you a lot of power. It isn't the professional's choice, but it is very useful and Corel Draw has part of what made Ventura Publisher powerful along with its vector drawing tools.

GAH! MS PUBLISHER! AGH! MOMMEeEeeee!
ok, ok, phew..... got that out of my system. Glad to hear you've decided to try something else. You will be so happy.
I've never tried MacPublisher Pro, and it sounds like Quark and Indesign might be both too expensive and too complex to jump into right now. (maybe further down the line?)
I'd recommend going on Ebay and seeing if you can find a version of PageMaker 6.5 for sale. It's not as complex as quark or indesign, and will make a good stepping stone should you decide to upgrade later.
or appleworks.

While Pagemaker may not be the publisher's choice any more, it is most like MS-Publisher for what you are used to using -- and likely capable for what you want to produce.
You should be able to find it for not too much money on ebay or at a discount reseller. I noticed the latest version for about $260US, just in a quick search.
If you can find demos of any other mentioned software, I recommend you try it out before buying anything. Once you start building your documents, you don't want to have to 'recreate' them in new software a few months later.

there is an app called ragtime that is <supposed> to be a page layout program the solo version is free, but it looks like thay may not port it osx- the normal ragtime is $99
http://www.ragtime-online.com/
I havent used this app, so cant recommend it, but its not a word processsor, and its cheap - it may give you a bit more flexability than a wp does...
