The original pic was taken with a webcam...plus I'm learning...so give me a break. You should be telling me instead what I'm doing wrong.

The second picture looks a tad green. Try adjusting your Hue/Saturation levels...

Select by color range... is your friend. To do color adjustments, select by color range using the eyedropper, (play with the tolerance slider) then use Color Balance, or Hue/Saturation to fix the un-natural colors one at a time. Command+h will hide the marching ants so you can see what you're doing.

Unsharp mask is also your friend. I usually set it to at least 4 levels, or it gets unnatural.

you may not be able to overcome a basic garbage in/garbage out problem there. Part one is having an image worth bothering with. Not trying to be mean, but there's not a lot to work with there.

i think her confusion is in your choice of words. what do you mean by "improved"? are you trying to color correct? to make one particular element stand out more? or are you just trying to artistically change the picture? if so, i don't know if improve is the right word to use.

demonhood's got the most of it... but mainly although you fixed the overall red tones of the first photo, you did it by blasting out the highlights... I agree that blurring the background clutter makes the foreground stand out more, but posterization just adds the clutter back in.

Demonhood gets me.

I don't think the word "improve" is the problem but rather what someone's idea of improvement is. Improve means to make something better period. So that's what I'm aiming for, to make it better whether artistically or not.

Good job! You seem to have the right idea for a beginer. You took out the background, added some detail to the hair and made it your own. There is no right or wrong when it comes to Photo retouching. What is important is learning how to get where you want to go. Once you are able to turn a photo into what your imagination desires the possibilites are endless. In the meantime it is a lot of fum learniing. I suggest learning and using PhotoShop as it is the industry standard. Find a better forum for display as this board does not seem to have a lot of "creative" knowledge.

Best of luck,

Bob

third on the talent comment...

---------

Try adjusting your Hue/Saturation levels
First try adjusting your color balance settings... H/S is VERY drastic at times and doesn't allow for gentle color tweaks.
