For general desktop publishing apps, are TFT (flat screens) monitors still the better choice over LCD screens? Granted that everyone prefers LCDs for aesthetics and footprint but strictly from the viewpoint of clarity and quality.

thanks for your thoughts

the big ole flat screen CRT (TFT) are much more color accurate than LCD's. But thats *really* only super important if you are doing print work..... i think.

You phrased your question incorrectly. TFT stands for Thin Film Transistor and is the dominate technology in at least all of the Apple LCD's. CRT or Cathode Ray Tube is the larger footprint, better color accuracy monitors that have been around for so long.

Gadzookie is right, it's not that big a deal if your surfin and emailin. Design requires color correction and "should" be done on a CRT monitor IMHO. Sorry to be the jargon police but I thought I would save you the impending flame.

unless you hard doing some hardcore, must-be-the-exact-color or the client is going to refuse the work print job, the newer lcd's are where its at.

The big problem with LCD/TFT is that the slightest movement of your head will change your view of the colours (kinda imagine it like a subtle hologram) which is why they aren't so popular for Colour accurate work. That said, if you're really into your colour accuracy then you shouldn't even look at your monitor and only pay attention to the Pantone or CMYK values anyway. Depends what you're doing.

In my experience though, the high end Apple TFTs (22" or higher) are very good for viewing angles and colour reproduction. If you're doing print work and you got two grand to spend on a monitor though, nothing beats a big old CRT with a calibration device. If it's a tradeoff you're prepared to make though, I'd go for the TFT big screen.

(As for cheap monitors - flat or CRT - CRT is the best, but not exactly what you want if it's essential)
