I have a Canon PowerShot S100. Sometimes when I take pictures with it it come out blurry. For example I recently took a trip to Carlsbad Caverns. Every single picture came out like this:

What am I doing wrong here. Sometimes they come out good.

I'm no professional, but when you are dealing with photos that involve areas where the light is less than daylight, the camera, digital or not, must compensate for the lack of light by keeping the shutter open longer.

What you are probably experiencing is blurriness from hand-holding the camera in a low-light environment. Since it keeps the shutter open longer, it will capture the slight movements of your hands. Try resting your elbows or the camera on a stationary object, to reduce this.

The solutions to this issue would be 1) Tripod, 2) Shoot with higher speed film (or on your Powershot, try setting the ISO to the highest number possible), 3) use a Flash (not probably helpful in a cave, due to the limited distance).

If you were using an analog camera, you could adjust the aperture and film speed, which would solve the problem. Lesser digital cameras don't have these options, so there is less you can do to correct it.

Hope this helps.

That is from a lack of adequate shutter speed to compensate for your holding the camera by hand in the low light conditions.

It is common for a small camera such as yours, and even while holding your breath you will have movement, simply from your blood pressure. (Unoticeable)

What you should do is the following:

Bracket your shots, and use a mono-pod, tripod, or brace area (rock outcropping).

Play with the ISO, Shutter Speed and the Apeture.

You could also try a flash and use post production to enhance the picture.

The S100 has a f2.8 lens which is ok, the lower the number the better (More light you can let in). What I like to do with these pictures is close it down to f16 or f22, then with the camera on tripod, let the camera expose the shot with a remote shutter device.

This will increase your depth of field, but play with the f-stop and the Shutter speed values.

You can hold a shot at a minimum of 1/30th of a second, 1/15th is not really plausible without getting this blurr distortion.

If you have any other questions, let me know, I will either answer you or point you in the right direction.

If you do these things, maybe your image will look like this.

Good luck!

THanks for the advice guys. Unfortuanly the PowerShot doesnt have a lot of advanced settings. The only one I can find is one called Exp (I assume that Exposure). It has a setting from -2 to +2 and I usally keep it a 0. Which wasy should I move it.

You may want to upgrade your camera.
Something with Manual modes.

I recommend Nikon Coolpix 4500.
You can probably pick one up on Ebay for about $500, and from my experience with this model, you will be very happy.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions, but I cannot afford even $500 right now (besides, I would buy a Canon if I did). The S50 looks nice. Hopefully someone who has used a Elph will have some suggestions.

You could sell the little (hobby) camera you have and invest in a Canon then. I'm just telling you from a professional standpoint, the Nikon is the best "value" per function, at that level.

A simple tripod or monopod would fix your problem. The first reply was spot on, the shutter speed is too slow for you to hold it steady. I imagine the camera is in auto mode and selects the shutter speed and aperature. Just grab a small tripod(three legs) or monopod(one leg) at Target or Kmart and screw it into the bottom of your camera. They cost around ten bucks. I have an old Olympus Stylus that is a "hobby" or point-n-shoot camera. I used a tripod all the time to take long exposures and they came out just fine.

The lighting in the picture doesn't look that bad. If you want to bracket your shots you can use the + or - that you mentioned. It will make small adjustments to the exposure to over or under expose the shot. Read the manual for a more thorough description.

I'm looking at a new digital camera.

I've been thinking of the following cameras:

1. Leica > Heard artifacts, but nice glass.
2. Minolta DiMage
3. DSC F717

Any thoughts?
I've always wanted a Leica, but have heard of
some problems and it is a Panasonic under the
Leica Skin and Lens...

Must be nice!

EOS 10D indeed.
That is a great camera, better than the D60
I've read... but the 10D Suffers from pixel stickies at long exposures over 3 seconds...do you find this is your experience? I like to take exposure shots at night and for closeup still life shots.

BTW: I noticed you are in Hawaii...

How does one go about getting a job in Hawaii? I'd love nothing more than to pick up and move to paradise and be a graphic designer...

Do you know anyone that is hiring?

Yeahw I definately like the 10D (you can see some of its shots on my site. I haven't experienced the problems that you are refering to, but i admit that i haven't taken a ton of night shots.
