I am looking for a good slideshow software application.
I want to take different size photos (some are old and some are more recent) and have a slideshow with music that can then be put on a VHS tape and DVD. I want to be able to use transitions and have the final slideshow a fairly decent size that can be viewed without squinting
I am not real happy with iMovie for this.
Also what is the best resolution to set up the photos? Some of the photos I want to use have been scanned in from old slides and they are very large.
Any help would be appreciated.

Keynote maybe? I know it exports to Quicktime but can you put a soundtrack to a slideshow? I don't know I've only used the initial release version.

Flash works, and they have templates for broadcast, and slide shows for photos built into MX.
Keynote as well, I like it.
Or PowerPoint <Just kidding on this one>
As for the resolution on the photos, for broadcast 72dpi, maybe 90dpi, no more; and then set your stage if using flash to the proper ratio and size for the screen to be viewing on.
It is important if you are broadcasting on a widescreen as opposed to a standard format 4:3 screen.
Also, if embedding into powerpoint for instance, you have to pay attention to this. I'm not certain about Keynote yet. Best guess, Keynote will adjust for you.

For NTSC, you should resize the images to 640 x 480. The dpi, as stated earlier, need only be 72 dpi.
Final Cut Pro or Express might serve you better than iMovie. Quicktime Pro does a pretty good job and does give you a transition of sorts. You'd probably have to edit your music in an editor (i.e. join tracks, etc.) to get its length to match what QT Pro put out.
That being said, do a search in VersionTracker for "slideshow" and you'll get a number of candidates with reviews for each.
Good Luck.

I think you can actually customize the image pixelwise to the shape and frame of the image.
This is not an issue.
Stay with 72 dpi or 90 dpi.
Anymore is a waste of filesize.
Here is a program I found while searching to answer this question more completely.
http://www.photodex.com/products/proshow/
It's cheap, and it should work for your ap.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I appreciate you taking the time to help.
I have Final Cut Express, so I am going to give that a try. I might try Keynote also but do not know if I can add music or have to do that in QT Pro.
