Too bad I can't vote twice. I'd vote for both. Don't make me choose - I wanna use both, please. . I use QK for most work that needs to be done fast and efficiently, ID for table jobbies.

Both here as well, but neither is 100% perfect.
Quark and InDesign are tools. Some tools are better for different jobs.

Indesign has it all - Quark can go to H*ll - I have every version and never use it anymore - Indesign for me!

Compare Quark 6 and Indesign CS.
InDesign's the winner hands down.

After much BS with Quark, and a new motherboard on my G4 PowerBook, I am finally using V6 on my Powerbook. I have used XPress since around 1985 and really enjoy it. I don't have any of the other problems some have posted here about, but that doesn't mean they are a company that's easy to deal with or even very agreeable.

Looks like InDesign is making inroads. By the way, last version of InDesign and Quark 5, InDesign one also. And not by a little bit.
The only reason people still use Xpress is the same reason accountants still use MS as an OS. They can't afford to change workflow.
And from what I've heard InDesign doesn't handle huge catalogues and what not very well. Doh!

No choice for me, only got InDesign that works with Chinese well enough, while I can only opt for QuarkXPress 4.0 if I were to use Chinese, and under OS 9 environment....
so, hands down for InDesign

Where I work, we are using Quark 4.11! No desire to upgrade and the only trouble we have is the semi-rare file from a customer that hasn't been saved down. We have one license for 5 just for saving down, and don't have to use it.
I'm ready to try putting InDesign into our workflow this year, but we will always have our legacy files to deal with and no real need to convert them.
InDesign will make it for small designers more quickly what a place with many users and a workflow that was set up with Quark in mind.

yeah, i'm a freelancer and i have quark v.5. saving down is a pain in the arse because i forget on occasion, and as you might guess, that only happens when we're on a short fuse.
many of my clients are switching over to indesign so i'm getting ready to take the plunge. this poll surprises me, i didn't realize so many people had switched. perhaps indesign really is the quark killer.

While Indesign is kicking Quarks butt -- - remember that there is a lot of printers that will not take Indesign files. There are some great functions in Indesign but these are causing headaches in prepress departments at printing companies.
Where I work we take indesign files - -but we have to create some effects that are created in ID in other programs such as Photoshop.
The 2 things that cause problems tranparancy and opacity. These cause ID files to not rip correctly.
If you do like working ID - - find a printer that will take these files and will help you set up your file correctly so that there are no headaches down the road.
If you any questions on this feel free and contact me.

there will always be glitches early on in the life of an application. in the case of quark there will be glitches until the company goes down in a big friggin' ball of flame.

To be honest... I would have to say most REAL places are using Quark 4.1, Photoshop 4-5 and Illustrator 8.
All on OS 8-9

I guess my shop is not "real" as we use InDesign 2. Photoshop6&7
Illustrator6,8,9&10 depending on what the customer send the files in.
BTW if Adobe sold ID for $100 Quark would be out of buissness in a month.

please define "REAL places".
advetising agencies, design shops, printers and large corporations (ie. target, best buy, etc.) in the midwest are using quark v.4, id 2, illustrator 10 and photoshop 7.
btw, when i say the midwest i'm primarily referring to minneapolis and chicago -- two of the country's largest advertising and design markets.

You ID2 proponents out there: how can I replace an in-use spot colour (PMS) in ID2 with another or at least change the colour reference? The "delete swatch" option is greyed out (I assume because its in-use.) Frustrating!
