Are there are guidelines for setting type for a poem. i.e. flush left, right, justified etc.

it runs the gamut.

imo it's easiest to read when flush left. hallmark seems to disagree with that opinon.

i should add that it depends upon the piece. if the poem is about being right, it might be nice to set it flush right to jive with the idea.

hallmark does it in a variety of ways, usually centered. that, however, was not the point of my comment.

while hallmark may be an enormous company that sells obscene numbers of greeting cards, they don't appear on the radar of good design.

guess you need to determine what the poem is, how you intend for it to be seen / read and what you prefer the tenor of the piece be.

good luck.

There are guidelines for poetry when it is used in a literary journal or a book of poetry. In those cases, the intent of the poet/author should be maintained and however, the poem was submitted from them should be the guide. Some poetry is very free-form—no grammar or punctuation, lines all over the place, going horizontally or diagonally, vertically etc... It's usually a fun problem to solve.
