I can't quite figure this out from the info on Adobe's website... Although it mentions that it ships with some Japanese Opentype fonts, it doesn't say that it supports double-byte entry or that it fully supports unicode...

Can anyone clear this up for me? If I buy an English version of Illustrator CS, can I run it under English OS X and still open and create files with Japanese?

i have english version OSX and illustrator 10 english version. I can type japanese on illustrator and it works perfectly. However, indesign does not support japanese AT ALL. I hope inDesignCS will fix this problem.

I concur. It have been there since Illustrator 7, I think.

superblue, did you unselect the whole language package when you installed OS X? That could be the reason you couldn't type Japanese.

To date, I've yet to try. I'm using a Japanese version of Illustrator 10, so naturally can type Japanese. The problem is my productivity drops due to the Japanese menus and palettes.

I haven't used Illustrator a great deal - I've spent a lot more time in Freehand, which as yet doesn't support unicode. So I was concerned the same problem may exist in Illustrator. Glad to hear it doesn't!!

Still - that's good news, thanks. Can anyone comment on Photoshop's non-western text handling by the way?

I think photoshop works fine on the non-western text. I have to ask my gf to make sure tho. She uses photoshop all the time and she is a japanese. I still think you will have no problem to use it in photoshop.
