I have an image that consists of a vector shape on a solid background. I printed this image out on my Deskjet 932c in Windows and it turned out great. When I tried to do it under Mac OS X, the edges of the shape were all jagged.

Ive tried all different printer settings and any Illustrator 10 preferences I could think of, but the image is still jagged. The only way for me to get a crisp printout is export the .ai file to a 300dpi tiff.

I never had to do this in Windows, but I notice that the Windows version of Illustrator 10 has a checkbox for "Bitmap Printing" which is checked, and I can't find this option in the Mac OS X version. I am assuming that this is the internal equivalent of exporting to a tiff.

So, Im wondering if this is an issue with postscript printing vs. non, or perhaps this option is just hidden somewhere else in Illustrator. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes , Illustrator needs a postscript printer. Save the image as a PDF and print it from Acrobat.

That did it, thanks for your help. Just out of curiousity, why would the Mac version have that requirement whereas the Windows version doesn't require that extra step?

If you don't like waiting for acrobat to boot up, launch your pdf's with the Preview app..

sounds like it's time to upgrade to the world of postscript

I was concerned about Acrobat 6 taking forever to launch. Is that an issue for everybody?

Acrobat 6 takes much longer to load, but you should be able to leave it open after the initial load. OSX's memory management will take care of it and shouldn't slow down your other apps to leave Acrobat open.
