What resolution is most appropriate for web images?

I use Fireworks MX, which defaults to 72 pixels/inch. It seems fine, but I'm wondering if there's a different "standard" out there?

Also, what resolution do most people use for images that are meant for both web and print? For example, if you print out any page from Apple's website, it will come out nice and crisp, so I'm wondering what resolution they use to create their images.

Thanks!

It's

72 for windows
90 for mac

but you are safe with 72.

If you are presenting to someone with a hirez monitor and it is for
a select crowd, (i.e., presentation via the web) splurge with 90 ppi.

When you optimize in fireworks, photoshop, or whatever, then you can
play with the percentages of quality, unless you use ping files in
which case you won't play with the %.

For web think about the pixel x pixel dimension rather than dpi:

Say no to 72dpi

Pretty good read. Since he mentioned near the end about printers usually using 96 dpi, should I then save images as such? At 72 dpi, they're pixelated when printed.
