Hi

This is mainly for UK readers.

Apologies if this doesn't seem like quite the right forum, but I trust the opinions here.

I've had an old manual SLR - a Canon AT-1 - for some time and may ask for a new one for Christmas! I see Jessops selling various new or second-hand cameras in the £150 range - a body and basic lens. I'd like something robust and of reasonable quality, with the standard manual/auto functions. I would add macro lenses, etc at a later date.

Any thoughts? What are the opinions of cameras in this range?

Thanks

What do you want to do with the camera ?
If it's for taking pics of your family those cameras that carnagex2000 gave links to are good enough. If you do it as an hobby I would invest in a decent secondhand manual camera. I would buy a Nikon FM2 or something like that. Or if you need an AF: A Nikon F801. But maybe you already have some Canon lenses ? If you go Canon then try to find yourself an Eos and invest in new glass. It's not worth investing in old Canon glass since the manual lenses and new AF bodies are not compatible (they are with Nikon).

Well anyway it all depends on your useage. I hope I was of any assistance.

PS: don't buy that Eos 3000. It's a toy. And that Minolta has the best light meter.

I would reccommend the Minolta X700. You could pick one of these up with Minolta MD 50mm lens for £150.

I've had mine a few years and it is a great camera. I mainly use aperture priority or manual, but there is a programme mode with the camera picking both aperture and shutter speed.

You've got depth of field preview (v.handy) and can over/under expose in half stops to 2 stops either way.

The machine is as hard as nails to boot. The Minolta lenses are great quality (I have a 28, a 50 and a 135) - and a lot cheaper than equivalents for the old Nikon manuals.

I googled and found this page on the X 700
