I've read about taking the excel file into
Illustrator and then outputing as an eps
then importing into excel, and that is all
well and good, but, can I import the
spreadsheet directly?

I downloaded extensis tools demo, but
cannot get the import to work.

Anyone have experience with this, or
any other method of importing
spreadsheets into quark 4, or 5?

I tried some extension but it was monumentally difficult to fathom and more heavy duty than needed (it's designed for personalising text - sorry I've forgotten the name but my iBook's in for repair, again).

Anyway, there's a quick and easy way suited to my needs in 4.1. Simply set up your columns of data in a spreadsheet then select the right bits, copy and then paste into a Quark text box of the dimensions you want on the page. All the fiddly tabs are then set up for you and all you need do is adjust the tab settings and/or text size to fit.

As I said that's for something not too complicated but a great time saver for me.

The data portion of the import can work as ghost_flash says, highlight the cells you want and copy/paste them into a text box in Quark.

Then all you need to do is set up the tabs how you'd like them to align. This works for bringing in the text, but makes any edits tedious if the source Excel file is edited regularly.

Either way its a pain without an expensive plugin for data acquisition from Quark.

For most of my uses, I've installed a Postscript printer driver on the machine with Excel. Then done a print to file. This resulting .ps file or .prn (on a PC) can be opened in the later versions of Adobe Illustrator for editing before saving as a correct EPS file for including in Quark.

This has the advantage of keeping the graphs or other Excel specific formatting intact that you would lose or have to recreate in Quark.

The downside is, if you are doing spot colors you'll have to redefine the artwork each time you bring it into Illustrator for saving as an EPS.

It's not the prettiest, but it works. Since I've not upgraded to the latest Quark with table support, I can't comment but suppose its buggy and half implemented.

Quark 6.1 just added an import chart feature in the picture import dialogue box that allows you to import exel files and I believe it also allows you to keep the formatting.

But just for the record, I hate Quark too.
