I am looking for suggestions regarding applications to help build icons and some onine tutorials/information about building icons.
I have wanted to do this for some time and never knew where to start.
Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest, lots and lots of practice... inevitability, you will not produce the best results straight away, but the more icons you make. you will get better.. don't stress out on trying to get every icon right. just finish them one by one, if the current one sucks, move on.. create another one. i find it keeps things moving that way, and you don't get in a rut and start giving up hope.

Agreed. The thing to keep in mind is that in order for the icon to be effective, it needs to have relation to the function it provides. Also, much like a charicature, you'll want to emphasize certain facets of the design.
