my wife is a professional photographer, and is in desperate need of buying a new CRT monitor. we need some help though. what recommendations can folks give for a monitor under 600 dollars? she's the real deal and needs a good one (as good as we can afford.)
thanks.

iiyama makes a solid monitor and their prices are very reasonable. others here seem to like the lacies. i have no experience with those.

I really like Viewsonic's pro line of CRT monitors. Can be found here. Scroll down to the "pro" section.

thanks for the suggestions. i really appreciate it. i have a few questions though. both ilyima and viewsonic have monitors right at 600 bucks. what makes one monitor preferable over another? i.e., what are we looking for? brightness, higher resolution, aperture grille (what is this? what numbers are preferable?) thanks in advance for help with these questions.

you're looking for all those things and more.
the viewsonics are nice monitors as are the iiyamas. one thing iiyama used to have was a lifetime warranty. if the tube went out they guaranteed that you would have your monitor repaired and returned to you within 48 hours. if they couldn't fix yours you got a new one. i can vouch for their honoring that warranty. mine went and was replaced ever so quickly. don't know if view sonic offers a similar program.

if i were your wife i would be trying to buy the best monitor possible. it's central to a professional photographer's business these days. not to mention it's 100% deductable come tax time. tell her to add the expense as a line item on jobs and defer the cost over her next ten or fifteen gigs.

Nec Mitsubishi 2070 seem to be made with the same tube than La Cie Electron Blue IV (same charasteristics). I use the latter and I think this 22" is the best CRT around, nonwithstanding Barco...
