In the real world, is a BFA in graphic design considerably more beneficial than an AAS in graphic design?
Seems like with AAS degrees, you get right to the meat and potatos as opposed to what seems like 60 extra hours of "world knowledge" type courses attached to a BFA.
I'm not downing or uping either, just curious as I know some of you have real world experience in this matter.

In the real world, at least to a good company, your degree matters very little compared to your portfolio.

Emphasis on good company. I saw an ad today for a company looking for a bachelors for simple HTML and CSS editing. All I currently have is an AAS degree. Shame that I need to go back for something I've taught myself since I was 13...

i know of at least nine creatives in advertising and design agencies that do not even have college degrees. all nine of these people are considered to be among the best in the business and hold management positions.
despite my observations i do NOT suggest people drop out of school. a degree is a smart thing to have and there's no substitute.
so, to answer your question, it makes no difference.

Excellent advice. I should have made that clear in my post...

I agree with both points of view actually. The bottom line is that the portfolio is the most important. BUT- that portfolio comes from what one is taught. I think more can be learned and gleaned from the BFA. program and the designer benefits from the knowledge as well as the portfolio.
